School Notes

  • The community college now known as the College of the Marshall Islands (CMI) came into existence officially when the Board of Regents of the Community College of Micronesia (CCM) issued its charter on 10 October 1989, designating it as the College of Micronesia-Majuro. Two years later, in January 1991, it was given its present name. In April 1993, CMI became an independent entity with its own Board of Regents and was chartered to serve as the post-secondary agency for RMI. A more recent change occurred in 1996--the establishment of a CMI branch at Gugeegue on Kwajalein Atoll, replacing an earlier extension center there. Degrees and certificates offered at the College of the Marshall Islands includes Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts, Certificate of Completion (CC) in Counseling, Certificate of Compeltion (CC) in Marine Conservation Manager/Technician, Associate of Science in Elementary Education, TESOL Certificate Program, Associate of Science in Nursing, Associate of Science in Business and Computer Science, Certificate of Achievement in Business Studies, Certificate of Achievement in Computer and Certificate of Achievement in Accounting. The college also offers Developmental Studies Program and Special Programs like Cooperative Research and Extension (CRE/CMI), Adult and Continuing Education, Upward Bound Program and Workforce Investment Act (WIA). The main campus of the College of the Marshall Islands is located in Uliga, Majuro Atoll. The College administrative offices, nursing dormitory, and library are located in the buildings formerly used as a hospital, as are some classrooms. A two-story classroom building was completed in 1991, with a 4- classroom addition completed in 1996. An administration annex, redeveloped in 1999, lies just beyond the men's and women's nursing dormitories, and includes the Physical Plant office and maintenance facilities, Personnel office, and small conference room. The College of the Marshall Islands (CMI) is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
