New England Culinary Institute (NECI) is one of the leading culinary schools in the United States. Mr. Fran Voigt and Mr.John Dranow founded New England Culinary Institute (NECI) in Montpelier, Vermont in 1980. Their vision was for a unique educational institution based on the medical school model of "learn-by-doing" training in real-life situations. The school has grown from one campus to three - two in Vermont and one at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Tortola, BVI -from seven students to over 500 annually, from one academic program to seven, and from one restaurant to multiple food service outlets. School Notes:

  • The associate's degree in culinary arts is offered on all three campuses. The associate's's degree in hospitality and restaurant managment is offered on the Essex campus only. The associate's degree in baking and pastry arts is offered on the Montpelier campus only. The bachelor's degree in hospitality and restaurant management is conducted on both Vermont campuses. The certificate program in basic cooking is offered in Essex, the pastry and the baking certificates are offered in Montpelier only.
  • Located on the shores of Lake Champlain between the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains, Burlington/Essex is one of America's most liveable cities. In 2002, we broke ground on several brand-new dormitories on our Franklin Street campus. These suite-style dorms offer single bedrooms and shared kitchen facilities. Couples housing is also available on the Essex campus.
  • In Essex, production classes are conducted at the Inn at Essex, "Vermont's Culinary Resort". At the Inn, NECI operates Butler's, a fine dining restaurant, and a popular-price restaurant, the Tavern, as well as all catering and banquets for the resort. The associate's degree and the first half of the bachelor's degree in hospitality and restaurant management is conducted on this campus, which also offers the associate's degree in culinary arts and the basic cooking certificate.
